P271
The assassination of Ali Larijani makes a ceasefire in the Iran war almost impossible because he was the pragmatic leader who could negotiate and unite different factions
What Jiang said
“once this war reaches a certain point where both sides are exhausted, then it is possible to approach him and say, 'You know what? Let's just negotiate a ceasefire.' And he'd be willing to because he's very experienced. He's also very influential, so he's able to bring together the different factions of the Iranian government and negotiate a ceasefire. With him dead, it is now almost impossible to foresee a ceasefire.”
Analysis
Larijani was a pragmatic, experienced leader who could unite Iran's factions and negotiate a ceasefire. With him dead, there is no one with the authority or influence to negotiate peace.
